Small Late 18th-Century Southern Irish Pine Cabinet
A charming and well-proportioned late 18th-century pine cabinet from County Cork, Ireland, dating to circa 1780. This handcrafted piece is a beautiful example of vernacular Irish furniture from the southern provinces, notable for its restrained design and enduring functionality.
The two doors feature original fielded panels and retain their hand-forged iron “H” hinges, an early hardware form that speaks to the cabinet’s age and authenticity. The warm, honeyed tone of the Irish pine has developed a rich, time-softened patina, with visible knots, natural wear, and surface marks that highlight over two centuries of use. The stepped cornice and block feet add a touch of architectural balance to the otherwise rustic form.
The interior includes simple open shelving, ideal for linen or kitchen storage, and shows the original construction methods, including wide backboards and pegged joinery. This piece would work beautifully in a country house, cottage-style interior, or even as a grounding antique element in more contemporary spaces.
