Louis XV Style French Provincial “Over Mantle” Mirror. Nice proportions with a gentile arched top, all retaining the original gilded finish. Made in France circa 1860.
It is a richly ornamented Louis XV style overmantel mirror, crafted in France circa 1860, retaining its original gilded finish. The generously scaled frame features an elegant serpentine form, typical of the period, adorned with bold acanthus leaf motifs and an alternating pattern of rocaille-inspired scrolls and oversized beading. The gilt gesso surface has aged beautifully, showing a warm, mellow patina with areas of natural wear and craquelure that lend authenticity and charm.
The original mirror plate shows desirable signs of age, including mild foxing and subtle speckling. This grand and expressive piece would serve as a stunning focal point above a fireplace or console, embodying the refined yet rustic spirit of French Provincial design while showcasing the grandeur of the Louis XV aesthetic.
